Game Elements

What are the qualities of Games?

Qualities of Games:

The person in the article starts saying that he may have contradicted himself because, he said earlier that games can not be defined, however according to the person goes to say that a game can be defined. A game can be defined if you spread out all the many different definitions that explain a game, you will find that there are themes that appear frequently when different sources define a game. The person in the article calls these formal elements(rules, conflict, decision-making...).Challenge for game designers refer to them as atoms, because the small chunks may be studied individually.

Atoms of the game :

According this article there is no definite list of atoms of a game , as there is numerous different metrics and classification of which parts are atoms and which are not, so that means that there is no perfect list. There are still common themes that occur often, which are.

  • Players
  • Goals
  • Resources and Resource Management
  • Game State
  • Information
  • Sequencing
  • Player Interaction
  • Theme
  • Game as Systems

Critical analysis and do we care?:

From my reading of the article Critical analysis is not rating or giving the game a mark out of 10. It does not just mean finding the faults and weaknesses of the game also. It just means looking at the game from an honest point of view on the game. It can also mean a deep look at the game. Critical analysis is good when comparing games and from this sort of analysis gives the designer an understanding to why the game is fun to play. It is also good for analyzing a game when its being created because it tells the game designer what to add or remove. There numerous ways to critically analyze but the article gives a three step guide to proceed analyzing.

  1. Describe what the game formal elements are, but there is no need to interpret any of it just yet
  2. Describe the results of the formal elements and how they interact with each other. What is the play of the game like and is it effective.
  3. You must try find out why the game designer chose them specific elements and what would happen if he chose different ones
These are some questions that may be used during various stages that you can use critical analysis.

  • What challenges do players face and what can players do to overcome these challenges
  • How the players can affect each other
  • Is the game perceived to be fair
  • Is the game replayable and are there various ways to reach victory or various start positions etc.
  • What is the game intended audience and is it appropriate to that audience.
