Game MDA Reading

*Hi Guys*

From reading the article on Design, Dynamics & Experience (DDE) for Game design. It first introduced us to the topic of MDA, the framework of it and what MDA means and stands for(Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics). It was first introduced by Robin et al, Hunicke, Leblanc, Zubec and this was all in 2014. In 2015 MDA was analyzed and critised by Luiz Duarte and Lana Polasky. They could identify two weaknesses. The weaknesses were that it focuses more on game mechanics, than anything else. This in turn made it not suitable for games that were gamified or games that were experience orientated. The MDA suffered in trying to suffer to provide a coherent framework for narrative game designs, however from this other scientist and practioners provided different frameworks that would be more coherent compared to MDA.

In 2008 Jesse schell created a different framework, It was greatly received by the public and by the scientist(Elemental Tetrad). This framework is considered to be essential to modern game designers. Although MDA and Elemental Tetrad are different frameworks for game designs they both are focused on defining both Mechanic and Aesthetic side, they're both completely different as it includes two more components on the game

  1. Hi Godwill, I really like your analysis of MDA. At the start you added information about the history of MDA and DDE which I haven't really seen done on other blogs so that was very interesting. The images were also helpful in order to understand the text. Thanks, Enoh
